There's No Such Thing as "We'll Do It Later" With a Newborn

If you're reading this with a newborn on your chest, or a due date circled on your calendar, I want to say something gently but honestly — this season moves faster than any other.

I've been offering newborn photography in Orpington and across the Bromley borough for years, and the one thing I hear most from parents who come to me isn't "I'm so glad we waited." It's always, always the opposite.

Those first days are unrepeatable

The curled-up poses that only work in the first two weeks. The way they fit in the crook of your arm like they were made for it. The tiny fingers, the button nose, the way they sleep through almost anything. These things feel permanent when you're in them — and then one morning you look up and they're gone, replaced by something new and wonderful but completely different.

That's why newborn sessions are scheduled within the first 14 days ideally, and no later than 21. It's not a rule for the sake of it — it's because that particular softness, that curled-up newness, is time-limited in a way nothing else quite is.

What to expect from a newborn session at Ashleigh Shea Photography

I want you to walk in feeling like you're visiting a friend, not turning up for an appointment. My studio is based in Orpington, easy to reach from across the Bromley borough — whether you're coming from Bromley itself, Chislehurst, Petts Wood, Beckenham or beyond.

Sessions are relaxed and led entirely by your baby. We go at their pace — feeds, cuddles, nappy changes and all. There's no rushing, no clock-watching, just us creating something beautiful together while your little one does what newborns do best.

I'll guide you through everything: how to hold them, where to sit, what works. You don't need to have done this before. I have.

You don't need to feel "ready"

I know the postpartum period is a lot. You might not feel like yourself. You might be running on no sleep and dry shampoo and sheer willpower. That's completely fine — honestly, it's expected, and it's part of the story.

Some of my favourite images are the ones that show exactly that: the tiredness, the tenderness, the absolute overwhelming love that comes with those early days. Those are the photos that make people cry at the kitchen table ten years from now.

You don't need to look perfect. You just need to show up.
